CUB BASEBALL OPENS THE SEASON WITH A DOMINATE 13-2 WIN OVER KATY PAETOW
If the first look at them is any indication, Brenham Cub fans could be in for a fun ride this season. The Brenham Cub Baseball Team opened the season with a 13-2 victory this (Monday) afternoon at Katy Paetow.
The Cubs opened it up by scoring a pair of runs right off the bat in the top of the first inning. Ethan Aschenbeck reached on a bunt single, and on a throwing error by Panther starting pitcher Victor Salazar, he ended up all the way at third base. Dalton Hart drew a walk, and Drake Bentke followed with an RBI single to score Aschenbeck with the first run of the game. Brayden Steele walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Luke Hardy drew a bases loaded walk, which scored Hart to give Brenham the early 2-0 lead.
The Cubs had their biggest inning in the top of the second by scoring five runs. Brenham loaded the bases on a single by Caleb Maurer, a walk to Aschenbeck, and a single by Hart. Bentke brought home Maurer on a sacrifice fly. One batter later, Landry Mendoza crushed a two-run double to score Aschenbeck and Hart giving Brenham a 5-0 lead. Then, Owen Finke reached first base on a single. Luke Hardy followed by smashing a two-run double to score Mendoza and Finke to increase the Cub advantage to 7-0.
Brenham added another run in the third inning. Maurer walked, and later scored on an RBI single by Bentke, which made it 8-0 Cubs.
Paetow got one in the bottom of the third to cut it to an 8-1 game.
Brenham put up two more runs in the fourth inning. Mendoza led it off with a solo homer. Finke singled, and Maurer beat out an infield hit, and on an error Paetow, Finke was able to score. That made it 10-1 Cubs.
In the top of the fifth, Brenham added three more insurance runs. Bentke hit a one-out single, and came home on a two-run homer by Mendoza. Finke followed that with a solo blast of his own, and the Cubs were ahead 13-1.
The Panthers added a run in the bottom of the fifth, but it wasn't enough.
Kyle Curtis got the start for Brenham, pitched the first two innings, and picked up the win. Dawson Keim, Sterling Scheffer, and Brooks Roznovsky each pitched an inning of relief.
The Cubs now get ready to head to Louisiana for tournament play this Thursday-Saturday.
