CUB BASEBALL WINS HOME OPENER OVER FRIENDSWOOD 7-5
After starting the season with two weeks of road games, the Brenham Cub Baseball Team finally got to play in front of the hometown crowd at Fireman's Park last (Monday) night, and sent them home happy with a 7-5 win over the Friendswood Mustangs.
Friendswood jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs off of Brenham starter Luke Hardy in the top of the second inning.
The Cubs came back with three runs in the bottom of the third. Dalton Hart got it started with a double, and Owen Finke drew a walk. Drake Bentke came up next and hit an RBI single that scored Hart, and cut the Mustangs lead to 2-1.
Ethan Aschenbeck reached on a walk to load the bases. Bleu Cienega followed with a single to bring in Finke with the tying run and make it 2-2. Landry Mendoza drew a walk with the bases loaded allowing Bentke to score the go-ahead run, and give Brenham a 3-2 advantage.
It would stay that way until the top of the fifth, when Friendswood would score a run to tie the game once again at 3-3.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Bentke put the game away for good with a grand slam over the right field fence, which gave the Cubs a 7-3 lead.
The Mustangs would not go quietly as they added two more runs in the top of the seventh to cut the score to a 7-5 game. However, that would be as close as they would get.
Hardy, who threw 101 pitches, went the distance to get the win for Brenham.
Next up, the Cubs will open the Brenham Alumni Tournament on Thursday. They will face Morton Ranch at 12 noon, and Willis at 7:30pm (7:05pm pregame on KWHI).
