TWO MEN SENTENCED TO PRISON TERMS IN GRIMES COUNTY DISTRICT COURT

Two men were sentenced to prison terms during the latest session of the Grimes County 506th District Court.

Juan Torres (Grimes County Jail)

41-year-old Juan Samuel Torres pled guilty to a third-degree felony charge of Assault Family Violence with a Previous Conviction. He was sentenced by Judge Gary Chaney to 15 years in prison based on a plea agreement made with Assistant D.A. Tammy Thomas.

The charge stems from a March 1, 2024 incident in which then-Navasota Police Officer Michael Stover, who is now a D.A.’s Office Investigator, responded to a reported family violence call.

The victim told Stover that Torres came home intoxicated, and assaulted her repeatedly following an argument.

Torres, who had fled the scene before police arrived, had a previous conviction for Assault Family Violence in Brazos County back in 2009.

Joseph Kwiatkowski
(Grimes County Jail)

Meanwhile, 47-year-old Joseph Kwiatkowski pled guilty to Driving While Intoxicated Three or More Offenses. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison based on a plea agreement made with District Attorney Andria Bender.

The conviction stems from a June 23, 2023 arrest. Navasota Police Officer Todd Moon responded to a report of a reckless driver on Highway 6 South.

Kwiatkowski admitted to drinking and had an open beer container in the vehicle. However, he refused to take any field sobriety tests, or to provide breath or blood specimens. After obtaining a warrant, his blood alcohol was determined to be .209, which is more than two and half times the legal limit.

According to Bender, Kwiatowski has a series of DWI convictions dating back to 1999, and was on parole for a prior DWI conviction in Montgomery County at the time of his arrest.
