LADY PANTHER SOFTBALL DOUBLES UP SOMERVILLE 18-9 FOR 4TH STRAIGHT WIN
The Burton Lady Panther Softball continued their early dominance of the District 26-2A competition with an 18-9 win over the Somerville Lady Yeguas last (Friday) night.
Lexi Broesche got the win for Burton after going all seven innings. She allowed just four hits, nine runs, only six of which were earned, five wallks, and eight strikeouts.
Lexi started the scoring in the top of the first. She reached on a single, stole second, and later scored on an RBI single by Amaya Williams to make it 1-0 Lady Panthers.
The Burton offense exploded in the top of the second inning for six runs. Lexi had the big hit in that inning as well with an RBI triple. An error and a stretch of five straight walks helped the Lady Panthers extend their lead to 7-0.
Somerville managed to score two runs in the bottom of the second to cut the Burton advantage to 7-2.
In the top of the fourth, the Lady Panthers scored five runs to extend their lead to 12-2. The key hits were RBI singles by Melanie Wood and Kelsey Landriault, as well as an RBI double by Lexi. The other runs scored on an error.
Somerville fought off being run-ruled by scoring one run in the fourth, three in the fifth, and three in the sixth to cut the Burton lead down to 12-9.
However, the Lady Panthers out the game away with six runs in the top of the seventh inning.
The seventh was highlighted by an RBI double by Lexi Broesche, an RBI triple by Melanie Wood, and a two-run single by Paige Fritsch.
Next up, Burton will be at Iola on Tuesday for a 6pm game. The Lady Panthers are 10-12 overall, and now 4-0 in district.
