BURTON LADY PANTHERS PICK UP A BIG DISTRICT WIN OVER IOLA 10-7

The Burton Lady Panther Softball Team went on the road last (Tuesday) night and picked up a big District 26-2A win over the Iola Bulldogs 10-7.

Burton jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning. Lexi Broesche reached on a single, and then two batters later Amaya Williams ripped her 12th home run of the season, a two-run shot over the centerfield fence.

After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Panthers would get on board in the third with two more runs. Williams hit a solo homer, her 13th of the season. Later in the inning, Laci Broesche singled, stole second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored on an RBI single by Leilah Ellis. That made gave Burton a 4-0 lead.

Iola came back with a four-run inning in the bottom of the fourth, which tied the game at 4-4.

The Lady Panthers responded with three-runs in the top of the fifth. Ellis and Melanie Wood hit back-to-back singles. Aerynn Huntsman laid down a squeeze bunt that allowed Ellis to score the go-ahead run. Kelsey Landriault brought home Wood on a sacrifice fly. Natalie Hodde added a double that allowed Huntsman to come in and score, which also gave Burton a 7-4 lead.

In the sixth inning, Ellis singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball to give the Lady Panthers an 8-4 advantage.

The Lady Bulldogs were not done yet. They scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a one-run game 8-7.

Burton added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. Lexi Broesche singled, Hodde reached on an error, and Williams walked to load the bases. Paige Fritsch was hit by a pitch, which brought home Broesche. Later in the inning, Wood was also hit by a pitch, which scored Hodde with the tenth and final run.

Lexi Broesche went the distance to get the win. She pitched seven innings allowing seven hits, seven runs (only three of which were earned), one walk, and eight strikeouts.

With the win, Burton is now 11-12 overall, and 5-0 in district. Next up, they will host Iola tomorrow (Thursday) at 5pm.
