CUBETTE SOFTBALL DROPS A HEARTBREAKER TO HUNTSVILLE 6-5 IN EXTRA INNINGS
It was a tough night at the ballpark for the Brenham Cubettes as they not only had to battle the Huntsville Lady Hornets, but the weather, and some questionable umpiring as well. Ultimately, the Lady Hornets would come out on top with a 6-5 victory in eight innings.
Due to rain received during the day in Huntsville, everything at the ballpark was pretty much soaked by the time the game started.
The Cubettes got off to a good start with a run in the top of the first inning. Aldyn Jaks reached on a one-out walk, and stole second base. She would then come around to score on an RBI double by Laityn Davis to give Brenham a 1-0 lead.
Huntsville came back with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Karlie Little had a two-run double, and Makennah Parker added a two-run single, both coming off of Davis, who got the start.
Coach Katie Roberts went to Kylie Baker after only one-third of inning, and she responded by getting the last two outs. However, the Lady Hornets led after one inning 4-1.
In the top of the second inning, Brenham got two of the runs back. Ali Tiemann drew a leadoff walk, and later came around to score on a throwing error by Huntsville.
Later in the inning, Isabelle Hyatt reached on a double, and later came around to score on an RBI triple to cut the Huntsville lead to 4-3.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Lady Hornets added another run. Parker hit an RBI single that scored Chloe Sanders to increase the Huntsville advantage to 5-3.
Brenham was finally able to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning. Hyatt got it started with a one-out double. McKenzie Tiemann followed that up with a two-run inside-the-park home run to tie the game at 5-5. For Tiemann, it was her team-leading eighth homer of the season.
In the top of eighth inning, the Cubettes thought they had gone ahead. Ali Tiemann singled, stole second, and moved to third on a groundout by Sandra Prieto. Jaycee Hegar came up, and hit a slow tapper back to the pitcher. Parker made the throw to first. It was thought by observers that the first baseman didn't have possession of the ball, that Hegar was safe, and that Tiemann had scored the go-ahead run. However, the umpires didn't agree, and instead it was ruled out #3.
In the bottom of the eighth, Huntsville loaded the bases on Baker, and scored the final run when Khloe Klawinsky was hit by a pitch. That gave the Lady Hornets a 7-6
Baker ended up taking the loss in relief despite pitching well, and also having to deal with an inconsistent strike zone.
Next up, the Cubettes return home on Tuesday night for a 5:30pm game against the A&M Consolidated Lady Tigers. It is also Youth Night.
Boys and girls wearing their jerseys can get into the game for free, and get a free hot dog. They can also stand on the field with the players for the National Anthem, and run the bases
KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 5:05pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com
