ONE ARRESTED AFTER SHOOTING IN COLUMBUS

  

A Columbus man faces multiple charges after his arrest following a shooting on Friday that led to a victim being hospitalized.

Officers from the Columbus Police Department were dispatched just after 5 p.m. to Columbus Animal Clinic, 923 Walnut Street, after dispatchers advised that a caller had witnessed one person shoot another.

Members of the police department and Colorado County Sheriff’s Office arrived to take the suspect, identified as 50-year-old Robert Jerome Axel, into custody. 

During the incident, a nearby business owner discharged a firearm at the suspect, which police say stopped him from advancing further into the targeted occupied business and reaching additional occupants inside.  The surrounding circumstances remain under investigation.

Police report that Axel resisted arrest, but after deputies deployed a taser, he was ultimately restrained, disarmed and apprehended without further incident.  He was charged with four counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and taken to the Colorado County Jail.

The victim was transported by Colorado County EMS to the hospital for treatment.  As of late Friday, the victim was stated to be in stable condition.

Police were assisted by the sheriff’s office, EMS, the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department and Texas Department of Public Safety.  

Investigation is ongoing.
