BRENHAM HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD APPROVES LOCAL PRESERVATION PLAN

  

The Brenham Historic Preservation Board on Tuesday unanimously approved a Local Preservation Plan.

The plan is required for submission to the Texas Historical Commission in order to be designated as a Certified Local Government Community, which provides opportunities for resources, technical materials and grants to support best practices in historic preservation.

The board initially discussed the plan in March, outlining goals, objectives and strategic priorities to guide preservation initiatives in Brenham.  The draft plan was revised based on feedback from that meeting.

Historic Preservation Officer Stephanie Doland explained that one of the requirements for certification is to identify and adopt goals to be accomplished within the next 1-3 years.  One of the goals is to conduct a communitywide historic resources survey to identify additional landmarks and sites of historical significance throughout the community.  Another is to update and formally adopt design guidelines for commercial properties in downtown Brenham.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, board members were reminded about the Main Street Board’s vote in April to increase the maximum reimbursement amount for its sign grant program from $750 to $2,500.  The board was also informed that both of the projects that applied for the life safety grants – Rally Room at 216 West Alamo Street and PlanNorth at the JH Faske Building at 114 East Alamo Street – are underway.  $120,000 has been included in the budget for next year to continue the program.
