BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO PERFORM FIRST READINGS FOR BUDGET, TAX RATE ADOPTION
The Brenham City Council will hold public hearings and votes on Thursday for the new fiscal year’s budget and tax rate.
The city is proposing a budget of $131,926,584. The budget is expected to raise more total property taxes than last year’s budget by $381,755, or 3.23 percent. Of that total, $207,787 is tax revenue to be raised from new property added to the tax roll this year.
Upon the first reading of adopting the budget, the council will perform first reading to levy the property tax rate at $0.4750 per $100 valuation. The tax rate is higher than the current tax rate of $0.4676 and the no-new-revenue rate of $0.4669, but below the voter-approval rate of $0.5108.
The proposed rate will allocate $0.3330 toward maintenance and operations (M&O) and $0.1420 toward interest and sinking (I&S). With the new rate, the tax on the average homestead would go up $25.08, or 1.87 percent.

Also on Thursday, the council will:
- Act on awarding a request for proposals (RFP) for a basketball court cover at Henderson Park. The lowest of five bids received was from Dudley Construction for $539,000.
- Take up a digital marketing agreement with Madden Media for the new fiscal year’s digital marketing and programming for the Visit Brenham Destination Marketing Organization in the amount of $100,460.
- Vote on an agreement with AJR Media Group related to advertising for Visit Brenham in the new fiscal year for $53,056.
- Consider renewing a vocational work contract between the city and the Texas Health and Human Services Commission on behalf of the Brenham State Supported Living Center for document shredding and litter management services.
- Hold executive session discussion regarding the appointment, employment, evaluation and duties of a new city manager.
The council will meet Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brenham City Hall.
