CUB FOOTBALL DEFEATS BASTROP FOR 700TH SCHOOL VICTORY
The #6 Ranked Team in Class 5A Division II, the Brenham Cubs, did what they do best, keep right on winning. The Cubs made quick work of the Bastrop Bears in a 40-3 victory on Friday night.
The victory marked the milestone 700th victory in the history of Brenham High School. Cub Football historian Michael Groves told KWHI that with this win, it makes Brenham one of only 29 schools in the state of Texas to accomplish this feat.
It didn't take the Cubs long to get on the scoreboard as Roland Branch Jr. found Markell Lewis on an 11-yard touchdown pass. That would be the first of Branch's five touchdowns through the air.
On their first drive, Bastrop had a punt blocked by Brenham's Quincy Adams, who then picked it up and ran it into the end zone, and just like that the Cubs had taken a 13-0 lead.
The Cubs were not through with their fast start in the first quarter as Branch tossed touchdown passes to C.J. Glover and Nate Rau to give Brenham a 26-0 lead.
The offensive yardage differential helped tell the story. At the end of the first quarter, the Cubs had outgained Bastrop 165 to 2.
Branch continued the air assault in the second quarter by connecting with Rau on a 23-yard touchdown pass to put Brenham up 33-0 with 11:02 left to play until halftime.
The Cubs rounded out their scoring as Branch found Jaden Nickerson on an eight-yard touchdown pass with 4:59 left in the second quarter. That made it a 40-0 game.
On the season, Branch has now completed 53 of 75 passes (71%) for 876 yards, 15 touchdown passes, and no interceptions.
The Bears did manage to get a field goal before the first half ended to make it 40-3 going into the locker room.
With the lopsided score, and Cub Head Coach Danny Youngs not being a fan of running up the score on teams, both sides agreed to a continuous clock for the second half. Both the third and fourth quarter flew by with neither team reaching the end zone again.
Brenham did have a second half highlight as A.J. Mitchell recovered a fumble and almost ran it back all the way. The Bears managed to stop him just before he could reach the goal line.
With the win, Brenham is now 5-0 on the season, and heading into the bye week. The Cubs will return on Friday, October 9, to travel to Waco University High School for the start of district competition. Also, prior to the game, the 2026 Brenham Cub Football Hall of Honor class was introduced on the field at Cub Stadium. The inductees included Jason Jaster, Gary Ragston Jr., Tony Burnett, Roderick Green, and Tim Cole Jr.
