HEARNE ISD TO REQUEST ‘CHARTER’ STATUS
The Hearne School District would like to turn two of their campuses into charter schools.
The district has applied for an in-district charter policy from the TEA, in hopes it will help them improve their accountability ratings.
If the district gets an "improvements required" rating for a fourth consecutive year, there could be financial consequences.
Superintendent Adrain Johnson says he hopes this charter policy could help give his district a much needed break from state ratings.
Johnson says the move would, “pause the accountability system in order to give time to get programs and systems in place."
The new charter policy was passed by the state legislature in June, which Johnson believes will give his administration time implement their plans.
Johnson says other districts throughout the state have turned around their progams, and so will Hearne.
The Hearne ISD will host town hall style meetings for parents that have questions about the charter campus plan in the coming months.
The district will submit its first letter of intent to the state by the end of the month.
