(Mississippi State)
Brenham High School graduate Teaira McCowan leads her Mississippi State teammates into the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championships, which get underway Friday across the nation.
McCowan, a 2015 graduate of Brenham High School, leads the fourth-ranked Bulldogs into the tournament’s first round, Friday night in Starksville, MS.
The 6’7” McCowan has become a force in women’s college basketball, averaging 17.8 points and 13.5 rebounds per game, while blocking 76 shots.
McCowan is the 2019 SEC Player of the Year; the SEC Tournament MVP; and a consensus All-American. She is also expected to be a high lottery pick in the WNBA Draft in April.
Over four years in Starksville, Teaira has averaged 13 points and 10 rebounds per game, and helped lead the Bulldogs to the National Championship game in each of the last two seasons. In 2017, she helped MSU to a shocking 66-64 win over #1-ranked Connecticut in the NCAA semifinals—ending the Huskies’ 111-game NCAA record winning streak.
In her senior year at Brenham, McCowan was a Parade All-American, averaging 19 points, 17 rebounds and four blocked shots per game, leading the Cubettes to a 25-8 overall record and a District Championship with a 13-1 mark. She was named All-State in her junior and senior seasons.
She also finished second in the shot put in the State UIL meet.
Mississippi State hosts Southern U., tonight at 8:00. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.
