CUBS WIN 5-2; PLAYOFF STREAK ENDS

The Brenham Cubs downed the Waller Bulldogs, Friday night, 5-2 at Firemen’s Park in the 2019 regular season finale.

The win, however, was not enough to continue the Cubs’ run of 35 straight trips to the post-season, as Magnolia rolled past Rudder, 8-1 and clinched the fourth-and-final playoff berth for the Bulldogs.

“It’s so disappointing,” said Coach Lanny Williams on the KWHI post game show.  “We were so close in so many games.  I feel so bad for our guys…I wish we could have won one or two of those one-run games early on.”

“Our guys understand what it takes.  We’ve got to get some work done (in the offseason) and come back here and get another streak started.”

As for the game, Ben Bosse (5-3) pitched six strong innings to pick up the win, scattering six hits and striking out 10.  Jackson Corn came on in the seventh to get his second save.

Jake Olson, Jake Kolkhorst, Seth Diggs and Garrison Weiss each had two hits on the night, leading a balanced Cubs’ offense.

The win by the Cubs (22-11/7-7) also cost Waller (15-9/7-7) a post-season berth.

It was the final game for six Cubs’ seniors: Hayden Allen, Seth Diggs, Keagan Eason, Evan Schroeder, Hayden Schroeder and Travis Vendrell.
