WEST NILE VIRUS CONCERNS

The Washington County office of the Texas Department of Health reports no cases of the West Nile virus, even after the mosquito population is expected to rise after the recent rains.

The illness does apper to be approaching our area, however.  Health officials in Montgomery County are reporting a case. The Montgomery County Public Health Department issued a noticed Monday revealing the victim as a 48-year old man.  The notice said he was one of ten cases reported in Texas so far this year

The health department said the man is recovering and doing well.  He is expected to survive.

Dr. Syed Ibrahim  of the Montgomery County Health Department  says they are encouraging the use of mosquito repellent  but notes there is little you can do once you get the virus.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control says that the West Nile virus is spread through mosquito bites.  The mosquitoes get the virus and pass it on through birds, animals and people.

The more severe symptom include possible seizures, paralysis and respiratory difficulties.

The Health Department says anyone with symptoms should see a doctor right away.
