BRENHAM PLANNING AND ZONING ADVANCES SIGNAGE CHANGES TO COUNCIL

Talks on sweeping changes to the City of Brenham sign ordinance will now head to city council.

Planning and Zoning Commissioners at their meeting Tuesday approved moving the ordinance along for further discussion, while recommending some changes.

The Commission recommended adjusting the area limit for electronic signs with varying messages, increasing it from 50 square feet per sign face to 64 feet. The proposed ordinance currently says properties will be allowed to have one sign with two faces, no more than 50 square feet per sign face.

During talks last week between councilmembers and commissioners, Select Furnishings owner Pat Johnson requested the city raise the area limit to at least 64 square feet. He said then that having a larger sign would allow people driving on the highway to read the sign message more comfortably.

The Commission also recommended an increase in height for residential subdivision signage, allowing a max of eight feet in height for entry monument signs opposed to the original five feet.

The item now goes to city council, who will consider it and the commission’s recommendations at their meetings in June.

The Commission also:

  • Approved allowing signs placed by school or government entities for public facilities in the B-1 (Local Business/Residential Mixed Use) District.  This would allow entities like Washington County, the City of Brenham, and Blinn College to place monument signs on vacant property, signifying entry into those areas.  The item will be considered along with the discussed changes to the whole sign ordinance.
  • Approved preliminary and final plats of the Market Square Brenham subdivision—in the 2400 block of South Market Street—and the Farm Houses of Pleasant Hill at Pleasant Hill School Road and Highway 36 South.
