BRAZOS COUNTY WOMAN WARNS OF SCAM

A Brazos County woman is warning local citizens of a nation-wide scam that has hit the area.

An envelope arrived Monday at the home of Tiffany Thompson with her daughter's name on it.  Inside was a check from Bridge City Bank for $3,100, with a letter addressing her daughter as "applicant," and saying the money was supposed to be deposited immediately and used to get her car wrapped.  In return, she would receive $500 of that money along with a $200 Amazon gift voucher.

She called the bank and was able to confirm it was a scam and says she hopes others can recognize it's a scam and depositing the money will end up doing more harm than good.

Thompson said the fraud agent from Bridge City Bank said more than 20 people have deposited the checks and these scams are showing up across the country.

  1. How is it a scam? Someone sends you a check, you deposit it, and it bounces. You don’t get the money. You don’t give up any money. I don’t get it.
