DR. WALTER JACKSON SELECTED AS FINALIST FOR STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE YEAR

Dr. Walter Jackson
(Brenham ISD)

Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson has been chosen as one of five state finalists for the annual Superintendent of the Year award.

The program, sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards, has recognized exemplary superintendents for excellence and achievement in educational leadership since 1984.

The state selection committee, which interviewed regional winners this past weekend in Austin, cited Dr. Jackson’s visibility as a leader and as a champion for public education.  The committee also noted his efforts to herald public education as the equalizer for all students, providing a path out of poverty through learning and academic achievement, and the foundation for the nation’s future.

Board President Natalie Lange said the board of trustees is “absolutely thrilled” that Dr. Jackson has received this “much deserved recognition”.  She said he continues to be a “visionary leader who inspires greatness in everyone around him”.  She mentioned his “unfailing energy and commitment” to Brenham students, schools, and the community.

The other four finalists up for the award are Fort Bend ISD Superintendent Charles Dupre, Burkburnett ISD Superintendent Tylor Chaplin, Dripping Springs ISD Superintendent Bruce Gearing, and Lubbock-Cooper ISD Superintendent Keith Bryant.

The 2019 Superintendent of the Year will be announced September 21st at the Texas Association of School Administrators/TASB Convention in Dallas.

  1. These negative comments are ridiculous! How about you support the schools instead of speaking negatively about the campuses and the leaders. I’m certain anyone that thinks a campus or an entire district can be narrowed down to one letter grade truly has no clue how accountability ratings are calculated. There are hundreds of distinct data points that go into this calculation and NONE OF THEM take into account multiple other factors that make a campus or a school. People in leadership positions are easy targets for negative comments, but you have no idea the amount of additional schooling and years of hard work they have put in to earn these positions! Also, if you don’t agree with the school board, then why don’t you take time to volunteer! That’s what they are doing! Volunteering their time. You want to talk about “your tax dollars”. How about all of our tax dollars that support the schools and all of the tax payers that love their school and speak very highly of it? Just so you are aware, the district also has state award winning teachers. Should we not nominate our teachers for awards or just not recognize leaders? Those of you speaking negatively seem to have some sour grapes. Maybe you were turned down for a leadership position? Keep up the good work BISD and don’t listen to the negative comments.

  2. Wow, instead of rejoicing with those who rejoice you are a Debbie Downer. Dr. Jackson is not the reason for the low teacher moral, high-crime in schools, and low district ratings. He inherited the district with these problems, so please don’t blame him for the problems. I my opinion, he has been working extremely hard to combat the problems. And by the way, he HAS in fact set foot in a lot of classrooms at BHS!! And by the way why are you on your computer at 7:50 am on a school day?

  3. I worked under several superintendents while employed at BISD and the only 1 that every visited the campus was Mr. Yeager. Great people skills and even knew everybody by name !!!

He doesn’t have to visit every 1 in a week but at least pop in to see what the working classrooms are about.

  4. Low score ratings for our district, all-time low teacher morale, and high crime in the schools, and he’s selected as a finalist?? Either the State committee should pay our schools a visit to see our district at work, or the standards are set extremely low. Also, Dr. Jackson has not once set foot in my classroom.

    1. So,you want him to step foot in EVERY class of BISD? How? He has his own family there. You think he wants this for his own BISD? Try again.

      1. It was common for past superintendent’s to visit classrooms occasionally and to visit each campus from time to time. As a taxpayer who expects accountability from our very highly paid central office leaders like Dr. Jackson, YES I do expect him to have an active presence on each our campus locations. (That expectation can take place during the school day so I am not exactly sure how having a family plays into that, it can and should be done during normal school hours) When you realize that Brenham Elementary earned a “D” on the latest TEA ratings, and Alton earned a “C”, we have a very real cause for concern. Our board and our leaders seem be spending a lot of time patting themselves on the back and nominating themselves for awards instead of making sure our schools are performing well. As taxpayers, we need to wake up and start to demand accountability.

      2. Yes, because that is a belief of his, to be visible in the schools and classrooms.

        Also, the numbers don’t lie.

I wish the best for him as he represents my district; however, I still question the distinction given the facts surrounding our district.

        There, I tried again. Thanks.

      3. The Texas Association of School Boards is good for one thing- promoting itself under the guise of advocating for Texas Schools in order to keep taxpayer funds flowing to their organization. Quite ironic that they use public funds to lobby and advocate the fleecing of the taxpayer.
