Following executive session at the city council’s meeting last week, the council voted unanimously to reduce the percentage of funds from the EDC’s half-cent sales tax that go to Blinn College. The percentage was reduced from 75 percent to 25 percent.
Schulenburg City Administrator Tami Walker said the city has received interest from several entrepreneurs, who are looking to apply for incentives to help start or expand businesses. She said the EDC, with the reduction of Blinn’s funding, will be able to focus on other programs or projects of benefit to the city.
The EDC agreed in 1997 to provide Blinn with 75 percent of the revenue from the EDC sales tax. This was so the College could renovate and operate out of the former Bishop Forest High School buildings.
Also after executive session, the council took no action on a pair of incentive applications for two prospective business developments. The first prospect is a potential convenience store and truck stop at the corner of Highway 77 and Interstate 10, formerly the location of Frank’s Restaurant. The other potential development is a business looking to purchase the old Exterran property at the corner of East Avenue and Schwarz Boulevard, just north of the city warehouse.
