WILD HORSE, BURRO ADOPTION EVENT FRIDAY, SATURDAY IN GIDDINGS
A wild horse and burro adoption event gets underway this weekend in Giddings.
Roughly 55 wild horses and 30 wild burros will be available for adoption today (Friday) and tomorrow (Saturday) at the Lee County Sheriff’s Posse Arena. Gates will be open today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with adoptions beginning at noon. Gates will be open tomorrow from 8 a.m. to noon.
The goal of the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program is to manage healthy wild horses and burros on healthy public rangelands. Excess animals are placed into private care through the BLM’s adoption and sales programs, as well as partnerships with organizations across the nation.
Adoption applicants need to be at least 18-years-old and have no record of animal abuse. They must also have a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space per animal, with free access to food, water, and shelter.
Adoption fees start at $25. An adoption incentive program is available, where adopters can earn up to $1,000 for adopting an untrained wild horse or burro.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Posse Arena is located at 2591 West Highway 290, west of the intersection of Highway 290 and Highway 77. For more information, go online to www.blm.gov, or visit the BLM Wild Horse and Burro page on Facebook.
