ABBOTT SAYS ‘NO JAILTIME’ FOR BUSINESS VIOLATORS

Gov. Greg Abbott

Governor Greg Abbott says business owners who violate the state's orders by opening up early will not have to serve any jail time.

Abbott issued a release this (Thursday) morning that says, "Throwing Texans in jail who have had their businesses shut down through no fault of their own is nonsensical, and I will not allow it to happen.”

Shelley Luther
(Dallas Co. Jail)

According to the Associated Press the move comes after a Dallas salon owner was jailed Tuesday for opening her business.  Shelley Luther sent to jail following a video hearing during which she refused an order to apologize for violating the order.  That led the judge to find her in contempt of court and sentence her to a week behind bars.

The governor's order does not remove any fines for violators.

The governor's order applies retroactively to April 2.
