Plans were discussed at Thursday’s Brenham City Council meeting to implement a modified summer camp/reading program over the course of nine weeks, starting the week of June 1st.  The programming, being set up by the Nancy Carol Roberts Memorial Library and Recreation and Aquatics departments, will focus on reading, STEM work, arts and crafts, active activities, and community information.

Each week will have a different theme or focus, including: Summer Safety, LEGO, Angler Education, Explore Nature, Celebrate, Camping, RECess, Art, and Shark Week.  The city will provide 100 @home kits, promote the bag for the week through a Take Home Tuesday Facebook Live event at 10 a.m., then distribute the bags that evening.

The city is looking to start off the summer with a drive-in movie.  City Manager James Fisher said Brenham ISD has given the city permission to use the high school parking lot to host a drive-in movie, which attendees could listen to via Bluetooth or their car radios.

In addition, the city will promote a Story Board Walk at Fireman’s Park each month, allowing small groups or families to walk through the park and read the stories on display.  The summer will also consist of virtual challenges, active scavenger hunts, and a summer reading challenges with prizes along the way.  The summer will then conclude with another drive-in movie.

Fisher said the Hot Nights, Cool Tunes summer concert series is still on the calendar for July and the first week of August, but city officials are considering the possibility of having to move the concerts from downtown Brenham to one of the city’s parks to adhere to social distancing guidelines.

Fisher also announced that the splashpad being constructed at Henderson Park will be ready by the end of the month, but cannot yet open per orders from Governor Greg Abbott.
