ROBERTS SEES ‘REALLY GOOD THINGS’ FROM CUBETTES SO FAR

Coach is optimistic about team's showing in early scrimmages

The Brenham Cubettes softball team continues to prepare for the start of the 2021 season.

They’ve taken part in a pair of scrimmages so far.  Head coach Katie Roberts says she’s seen some really good things in “all areas of the game.  A lot of the girls are getting opportunities and taking advantage of them.  The thing that I am the most proud of is our energy as a team.”

Roberts says the team’s pitchers, Presley Parker and Della Jasinski, “have been doing a good job of hitting spots and keeping other hitters off balance.  I also feel pretty good about us executing signals offensively as a whole and making adjustments at the plate.”The Cubettes will have a number of new faces taking the field this year, and Roberts has been “very impressed with our freshman class as a whole (Kaylyn Rodriguez has been on fire).  They are stepping up in big moments of games and making things happen offensively and defensively.  Usually, scrimmages are times for them to adjust and get used to playing and this group has started at a higher level with adjusting then other freshmen in the past.”

She’s also very pleased with the way the upperclassmen are stepping into leadership roles and getting out of their comfort zone.  “They are a fun group to be around and it has been fun to compete with them.”

Roberts also says there’s lots of work to do.  “Going into our next scrimmages, I think that we will see tougher pitching so I feel as if manufacturing runs and situational hitting will be our focus going into Saturday.”

“We will be playing two quality teams in Bridgeland and Klein and I am looking forward to seeing how we do against them.  Pitchers will need to keep the ball low and I project our defense will get more opportunities to make plays on the field.  We need to work on communicating as a whole on defense.”

The Cubettes will travel to Klein, Saturday for their next scrimmage.  Their next home scrimmage will be Monday when they host Smithville (4:30, JV and 6:00, Varsity).

The 2021 season opens Monday, February 15 at Klein Cain.  The Cubettes will host the Leadoff Classic, February 18-20.  They’ll open district play, Tuesday, March 2 at Magnolia West.
