The Cubs (3-2/2-0) jumped out to a 28-0 lead and rolled to a 56-35 win over the high-powered Mustangs.

Magnolia West (2-3/1-1) entered the game averaging 576 yards per game offense, but their defense was yielding over 545 yards per game as well.

The Cubs took advantage, scoring touchdowns the first six times they touched the ball.

Quarterback Caleb Hill put the Cubs on the board on the team’s opeing drive, with a 20-yard run to the end zone.

Running back Ernest Patterson, who rushed for over 200 yards for the first time this year, added to the Cubs’ lead with a 67-yard sprint.

With less than a minute left in the first quarter, Hill hit Jaquay Cross for the first of his three touchdown receptions—a 10-yard scoring toss.

Just over a minute later it was Cross on the defensive side that picked off a Tyler Ferre pass, setting up the Cubs near mid-field.  On the next play Hill hit a streaking Cross for a 56-yard touchdown pass, lengthening the Brenham lead to 28-0.

“This was the first time this season our pre-game warm up and our energy in the lockerroom looked like last year’s team,” said Cubs’ head coach Glen West.  “We came out really hot, and we needed to.”

After the Mustangs got on the board on a nine-yard pass from Ferre to Micha Small, the Cubs recovered an onside kick at the 50-yard line.

On the next play, Patterson went the distance to give the Cubs a 35-7 lead.

That lead would be 42-21 at halftime, after Cross’ third touchdown reception—a 31-yard pass from Hill.  Magnolia West would add a 7-yard run by Adrian Thomas and a 20-yard hookup from Ferre to Damarren Mitchell.

The two teams traded second half touchdowns, as the Cubs scored on a 5-yard run by Patterson and a 27-yard pass from Hill to Walter Thomas.

The Mustangs scored on a 30-yard pass from Ferre to Small, and a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Ferre.

“The kids executed our game plan,” said coach West.  “They (Magnolia West) throw so much at you that there are chances for mistakes—and we did make some.  But I’m so proud of our kids.  This is a big, big, win.”

Hill finished the night completing 10 of 13 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns.  He also ran for 56 yards and a score.

Cross caught five passes for 183 yards and three touchdowns.  Patterson had 201 yards rushing and three scores.  Thomas would finish with three catches for 56 yards and a score.

Next up for the Cubs will be Stratford at Tully Stadium in Houston.

“They went to the State Semi-finals last year, and they have nearly everybody back.  We’re just thankful to be in the position we’re in right now.”

Kickoff Friday night is set for 7:00.  The game can be heard beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30 on KWHI and www.kwhi.com.
