PARKLETS TO BE DISCUSSED BY BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL

  

The Brenham City Council will meet today (Thursday) to discuss parklets in downtown Brenham.

In a work session, councilmembers will receive a presentation on parklets and potential plans for more in downtown.  Parklets convert curbside parking spaces into community spaces for pedestrians, such as the patio areas of 96 West and 30 North Gastropub.

City of Brenham Tourism and Marketing Director Jennifer Eckermann said downtown’s growth since 2015 has sparked conversation on if and how many more parklets should be allowed downtown, whether their benefits offset the impact of limited parking, and if only certain types of businesses should be allowed to have parklets.

Main Street Brenham has begun gathering information from other communities that are successfully incorporating parklets in downtown areas, and will make recommendations to the council in upcoming months regarding their potential future in downtown.

In similar businesses, the council will consider the renewal of the city’s parklet agreement with 96 West at 103 South Baylor Street.

Also at today's meeting, the council will consider:

• Adopting new policies and procedures for city boards and commissions, and act upon recommendations for appointments and reappointments to various boards and commissions. No action was taken on new policies and procedures at the council’s last meeting, as Councilmember Atwood Kenjura had questions about the attendance portion of the policy.
• A professional services agreement between the city and Strand Associates, Inc. related to 2022 sanitary sewer improvements.
• A resolution adopting a new fee schedule for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department.
• An ordinance granting a specific use permit to allow an accessory dwelling unit on property at 405 Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway.
• Approving service orders to the master services agreement with AARC Environmental, Inc. for tier II reporting, spill prevention control and countermeasures and a Texas Pollution Discharge Elimination System for the Brenham Municipal Airport.
• A Cisco Enterprise user agreement between the city and Cisco Systems, Inc. related to the city’s Voice-Over-IP phone system. The council will also look at a payment agreement with Presidio Technology Capital related to the city’s critical network hardware and VOIP phone system.
• An agreement between the city and Avocette Technologies, Inc. and Carahsoft Technology Corporation for online planning and permitting software.

The council will meet at 1 p.m. at Brenham City Hall.
