Washington County Commissioners ratified the redistricting changes formally proposed by the court last month at their meeting today (Tuesday).

Commissioners approved an order conforming election precincts to the adjusted commissioners court, justice of the peace and constable precinct lines adopted on November 12th.

Election Administrator Carol Jackson said the changes mean the county will have two fewer election precincts than it did 10 years ago, with 19 compared to 21.

Jackson explained that election precinct 316, located around FM 2935 and Little Sandy Creek, has been moved into precinct 104 and no longer exists.  Precinct 202, around the meeting point of Highway 290 and Highway 36 South, has been separated; Precinct 406 will take in 202 from Highway 290 to just past FM 109.  Precincts 413 and 414, in the Berlin and Greenvine area, have been combined into just 413.

According to Jackson, Precincts 1 and 4 gain more population and voters with these changes, while Precincts 2 and 3 have fewer in order to balance out.

Commissioner Kirk Hanath commented that this redistricting process was “probably the easiest” he has been a part of over his time in office, and was “pretty cut and dry.”

Also at today’s meeting, commissioners approved an agreement between the county and Brannon Industrial Group (BIG) for BIG to provide all labor for the annual spring cleanup event, during the county cleanup days.  Environmental Health Director Mark Marzahn said the county has had difficulties getting the needed number of temporary workers to provide labor for the event.  Marzahn said BIG will use its own employees to work the event for $3,300, the same rate the county budgeted for temporary workers.
