EARLY MORNING DORM FIRE AT PRAIRIE VIEW A&M UNDER INVESTIGATION

Officials in Waller County are trying to figure what caused an early morning fire inside a dorm building at Prairie View A&M University.

The fire broke out just before 6am this (Wednesday) morning on the third floor of one of the dorm buildings.

Three Prairie View students and one police officer were hospitalized as a result of injuries sustained while trying to escape the fire.

Reports say that two of the students were rescued from a third story ledge by firefighters. They were taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

Another student jumped out of a third story window to the ground, and suffered a leg injury. It was a cut on the leg that also required medical attention at the hospital.

A policeman was hospitalized with smoke inhalation after he ran into the burning building to help get the students evacuated.

Fire officials said that the fire is believed to have started in an air conditioning unit in a hallway on the third floor. The fire was contained to just the hallway itself.

The University sent out a press release saying that all students were accounted for, and that they are assisting students with relocation arrangements.

The cause of the fire remains under further investigation.
