The City of Burton is moving forward with plans for several improvements at Weeren Park.

On Tuesday, the Burton City Council approved a bid of $1,121 from Jim Finke of Round Top to repair and refurbish the Chamber of Commerce building at the park.

Councilmember Paul McLaughlin, a member of Burton’s Beautification and Ordinance Compliance Committee, said the 5 x 9 building is verified as the smallest Chamber of Commerce building in the United States.

McLaughlin said other projects that are in the works for the committee include expanding the walkways and adding a table and bench to the park.  It also seeks to paint the welcome sign at the American Legion post.  Past projects have included the installation of a fountain at the park.

Donations and committee fundraising cover all costs for the projects, which McLaughlin said are all intended to improve the look of the city.

Also on Tuesday, the council swore in Councilmember Tommie Gilmon for another term in office.  No election was held on Saturday for the city, as she was unopposed.  The council also appointed Nathan Kalkhake to continue serving as mayor pro-tem.

In other action, the council:

  • Accepted the engagement letter submitted by Medak & Oltmann, LLP to perform the annual audit of the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022.
  • Approved a resolution authorizing the city to enter into an agreement with the state closing a segment of the state highway system on Spur 125 between Mulberry Street and Texas Street for the annual Sons of the Legion Cotton Gin Classic Car Show to be held on June 11th.
  • Tabled action on accepting the audits of seizure funds as required by Code of Criminal Procedure for Fiscal Years 2020-21 and 2021-22.
  • Authorized Nathan Kalkhake, Macey Tidwell, Tommie Gilmon and Paul McLaughlin as signers on all city bank accounts.
