MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM MONDAY AT BRENHAM AMERICAN LEGION HALL
A Brenham native and 37-year Army veteran will be the featured speaker for today’s (Monday) Memorial Day program, hosted by the Washington County Veterans Association (WCVA).
Lieutenant Colonel Arthur Free will speak during the event, which will be held in person beginning at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Hall at Fireman’s Park.
Free graduated from Texas A&M, where he served as a member of the Corps of Cadets, and was commissioned in 1982 as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. His assignments included the U.S. Army Engineer School in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and the 420th Engineer Brigade in Bryan. He also served as the Area Damage Control Officer for the Corps Staff Engineer Section, III U.S. Corps at Fort Hood when he was deployed in 2004 to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Free retired from the military in November 2019. He lives with his wife, Susan, who served in the military for 22 years, on their farm in Milam County.

A brisket and sausage meal will be served both dine-in and via drive-thru after the program. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased from members of the WCVA, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans. A limited number of tickets will be sold at the door.
