FORMER BRYAN PD ASST. CHIEF ACQUITTED ON ASSAULT CHARGE

A former assistant chief with the Bryan Police Department has been acquitted on a 2020 assault charge.
A jury on Wednesday found 49-year-old Wayland Rawls not guilty of a misdemeanor assault following an incident at a school fundraiser at Allen Academy in February 2020.
Rawls, who was off-duty at the time, was accused of striking a man multiple times. Rawls pleaded not guilty to the charge, saying he acted in self-defense.
Rawls retired from the department in the midst of the investigation, after 24 years with the agency.
The trial began on Monday, and Wednesday’s verdict came after less than an hour of deliberations.
