GRASS FIRE NEAR BURTON BURNS 20 ACRES

Approximately 20 acres burned in a grass fire Tuesday evening northeast of Burton.

Around 7:45 p.m., the Rocky Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to a grass fire in the area of FM 390 West and Longpoint Road.

According to Rocky Creek Fire Chief Tim Mantey, the fire was 3 acres in size when firefighters first arrived, but was spreading rapidly.

Volunteers from the Burton, Berlin, Gay Hill and Meyersville fire departments were called out to assist with structure protection and help with the fire attack.

The fire was contained shortly after 9 p.m.  All crews cleared the scene just before midnight.

Assisting with the fire was Washington County EMS for drone flyover, the Washington County CERT team, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County COPs and Washington County Emergency Management.  The Texas A&M Forest Service was also notified.  Mantey thanked Washington County dispatchers for their work in coordinating assets.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
