FAYETTE COUNTY BUILDING NEW RECYCLING FACILITY
Construction has begun on a new recycling center in Fayette County just north of Warrenton.
Workers from the Road and Bridge Departments in Precincts Two and Four are constructing the recycling center on property that the County owns on Huenefeld Lane.
They are building a 20 feet by 30 feet pole barn that will house cardboard and plastics balers.
Currently, Fayette County has recycling trailers on the property that take items from Warrenton to La Grange and back.
Recycling Manager Paul Zapalac said that with the balers they are hoping to reduce the number of trips to La Grange.
He added that eventually they are planning install a trash compactor on the site also.
Fayette County received a $39,000 grant from the Capital Area Council of Governments Solid Waste Advisory Council that helped make the center possible.
Zapalac told the Fayette County Record that the need for extra recycling facilities arose due to county residents ordering more items from on-line retailers, such as Amazon, which has greatly increased the amount cardboard that they are taking in.
Plans are in the works for a similar a recycling station to be built in Fayetteville.
Fayette County Commissioners and the City of Fayetteville have already signed an interlocal agreement.
Zapalac said that he hoping to apply for another grant from CAPCOG in order to help fund that facility as well.
