CITY OF BRENHAM TO HOLD SPECIAL ELECTION FOR WARD 3 COUNCIL POSITION
With last week’s announcement that Brenham City Councilmember Atwood Kenjura is running for mayor, the City of Brenham will hold a special election in conjunction with the general election on May 6th.
Kenjura’s decision to run for mayor created a vacancy in his position of Ward 3 Councilmember. He will continue to serve in the position until a successor is elected.
Per the Texas Constitution, when an elected official announces their candidacy for any public office other than their current one, the announcement leads to an automatic resignation of that office. A special election to fill the opening is required to be called and held within 120 days of the vacancy occurring.
Starting Friday, those who are interested in applying for a place on the special election ballot for the Ward 3 council position can pick up a candidate packet in the city secretary’s office at Brenham City Hall. They can also download a packet from the city’s website, www.cityofbrenham.org/elections.
The filing period for the special election will last from 8 a.m. on Friday, February 2nd through 5 p.m. on Monday, March 6th.
So far, Kenjura is the only person to formally announce their intent to run in the May 6th elections. The seats of mayor and Ward 3 councilmember will be on the ballot along with Ward 2 Councilmember Albert Wright and Ward 4 Councilmember Adonna Saunders.
Filing for mayor and the Ward 2 and 4 council positions opens Wednesday and continues until Friday, February 17th. Early voting is Monday, April 24th through Tuesday, May 2nd.
