A $44 million renovation project is set to begin using $34 million secured through the Texas Legislature and $10 million being raised through a capital campaign organized by the Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Foundation.

Site Manager Jonathan Failor says this is a chance to breathe new life into many of the site’s facilities and exhibits.

The Star of the Republic Museum and the Visitor Center are some of the focal points of the project, but the improvements will extend across the 300 acres of the historic site.  Plans also call for the exploration of the original Washington townsite and recreation of significant buildings.

Failor says these upgrades will give visitors a new way to learn about the origins of the Lone Star State.

Failor anticipates construction will be phased in over two years, with partial site closures beginning late this spring or early this summer and continuing into early- or mid-2025.
