AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY PROGRAM AT CANNERY KITCHEN

  

The next installment of the James Emerson Dennis Jr. African American History Forum Series will be held this Monday night.

The theme for the Forum Series is “Remembering the Past & Preparing for the Future.”

The forums are being held every Monday night during February, which is also African American History Month, from 6-7pm at the Cannery Kitchen at 314 East Alamo Street in Brenham.

The first installment was held this past Monday, and was entitled “Remembering the Saints: Those Who Served in Washington County.” The forum remembered  Washington County Precinct One Commissioner David Simpson, City of Brenham Municipal Court Judge Eddie Harrison, and former Brenham City Councilman Henry Pettie Jr.

This coming Monday, the topic will be “The Criminal Justice System and People of Color – A Paradigm Shift.” The scheduled guest speakers are City of Brenham Municipal Court Judge Robert Wright, Washington County Precinct One Justice of the Peace Doug Zwiener, Brenham Police Department Captain Lloyd Powell, and Washington County District Attorney Julie Renken.

The forum series continues on February 20 with “Lift Every Voice and Sing – The Historical Impact Black Gospel Music has had on the Church & World”  It will feature the Washington County Mass Choir.

The final forum is on February 27.  They will introduce the Brenham High School James Emerson Dennis Black History Club.

Last year’s forums raised money to start the James Emerson Dennis Scholarship at Brenham High School for $5,000.  This year’s goal is to start a $15,000 endowed scholarship at Blinn College in memory of Judge Eddie Harrison.
