ARTIS EDWARDS SR. RUNNING FOR BRENHAM SCHOOL BOARD

Artis Edwards Sr.
(Hempstead ISD)

A former principal at Brenham Junior High School and a local pastor is seeking to become a Brenham School Board trustee.

Artis Edwards Sr. served as the junior high school principal from January 1997 to May 2011, and is the senior pastor at New Beginning Missionary Baptist Church.  He has also been the principal at Hempstead Middle School and is currently an interim assistant principal at Hempstead High School.  Edwards is running against Kyle Hafner for the position of Susan Jenkins, who is not pursuing another term.

Edwards says his motto is “children first.”

Edwards says his goal is to help the community understand that the school system’s priority is and will continue to be the student.  In that process, he wants to invest in the students’ education with quality teachers and strong safety and security.

The Texas Association of School Boards says trustees can be employed in neighboring districts because the board that the trustee serves on cannot impose its will on employees in the other district.  Edwards believes that, if he is elected, his position in Hempstead would enhance his service as a Brenham ISD trustee.

The race between Edwards and Hafner is currently one of two that will be contested come May 6th.  Dr. Michael Altman is running for re-election and will face Archer Archer.  Unopposed are incumbent Kelvin Raven and Bonnie Brinkmeyer, who is pursuing the seat of former trustee Mark Schneider.

Friday is the final day to apply for candidacy in the spring election.

  1. Artis Edwards was principal for both of my boys. He is a fine, intelligent, and fair educator. I feel he will bring a lot to the table and enhance our school board.
