HIGHWAY 290 BACK OPEN AFTER PILE-UP INVOLVING MULTIPLE 18-WHEELERS

Update @ 1:15 p.m.: DPS reports that the roadway is back open as of 1:15 p.m.

Original Story @ 9:45 a.m.: Authorities are at the scene of a major accident this (Friday) morning on Highway 290 West near Red Tip Lane, between Brenham and Burton.

DPS Sergeant Justin Ruiz reports the accident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. and involved four 18-wheelers and a Hyundai passenger car.

According to Sgt. Ruiz, the Hyundai was traveling eastbound on Highway 290 when it attempted to stop due to a dog in the road.  The vehicle was then struck by the 18-wheelers, causing a chain-reaction crash.

One of the trucks turned over, causing it to spill its load of rocks and begin leaking oil and diesel.  A HAZMAT crew was called in to clean up the spill.

Three people were transported to Baylor Scott & White in Brenham with minor injuries.

Sgt. Ruiz said the road will be shut down for an extended period of time.  Drivers should plan for delays or attempt to find an alternate route.

  1. I drive Old Mll Creek minimally twice a day. I was stunned with the number of 18 wheelers, truck and other general traffic on Old Mill Creek road that day. My thoughts were “hummm wonder what the plan is for when construction starts”. There is no plan and no one wants to address it. The other concern is that many will divert to Farmers Road for an alternative route. Farmers Road is not big enough(Wide) nor in a state of good repair to handle that kind of traffic. A good example of TxDOT sticking their heads in the sand. They will not deal with it until the time comes, and then we will have to beg for a plan.

    1. Not just TXDot…commissioners court as well. They are all government people who answer to their own desires and those of their buddies. And anything that brings attention to them..maybe helicopters?

  2. Anyone who finds themselves in this sort of situation is certainly going to consider alternative routes…I would do the same. But what happened in this case is hundreds of vehicles moved to the Old Mill Creek Road. Dozens of 18 wheelers. To a great extent most moved along at a reasonable pace. But a lot didn’t…especially the 18 wheelers. This is a common issue on Old Mill Creek. On busy Fridays and Sundays the traffic backs up at the light and folks find good Ole Old Mill Creek (and all the other roads along the corridor) to save 5, 10, 15 minutes of their busy schedules. I’ve reached out to County officials to find out what the heck the plan is when construction starts on the loop. No real answers. So too bad for you red neck country bumpkins living along these roads for decades…you just have to put up with it…we have to take care of all these folks just flying through the Country that might have to wait a few minutes. They are in a big hurry to get to Houston fast so they can really face nasty traffic..Good ole government officials…what would we do without them.
