CONSTRUCTION WORKER KILLED IN FALL AT TEJAS CAMP & RETREAT
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal workplace accident last week at Tejas Camp and Retreat near Giddings.
According to a release issued by the sheriff’s office on Monday, Lee County dispatch received a report around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 26th. The caller stated that a worker had fallen from a roof at the retreat center, located at 1038 Private Road 2191, and was unresponsive.
Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger and sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene, as well as Lee County EMS, Precinct 2 Constable AJ Gonzales and Precinct 3 Constable Billy Stephens.
After investigation, they determined that a construction worker, identified as 33-year-old Victor Antonio Barrios Castillo, had fallen from the roof after disabling his safety harness to retrieve fasteners. Castillo’s injuries from the fall were fatal.
Lee County Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace Michael York conducted an inquest at the scene.
According to the sheriff’s office, Castillo was a resident of Venezuela and had family ties in El Paso. The sheriff’s office has been in contact with his family.
The sheriff’s office’s criminal investigations division is leading the investigation into the incident to ensure all circumstances are reviewed.
