BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER COST PARTICIPATION AGREEMENT FOR SAEGER STREET EXPANSION, CALL MAY ELECTIONS
The Brenham City Council will act Thursday on a cost participation agreement to assist in funding the expansion of Saeger Street.
As development occurs on North Saeger Street and Jefferson Street with the Wilkins Valley subdivision, the developer, Collier Construction, plans to build and extend a new section of North Saeger Street.
According to the agenda packet for Thursday’s meeting, the city is seeking to expand the section of roadway from 31 feet to 41 feet in order to match up to South Saeger Street on the south side of Main Street, by Grace Fellowship. City staff writes that, since the road will one day extend to Blue Bell Road, it is important to proactively expand the roadway to accommodate future growth of the city.
The city’s participation cost would be $285,112, with the total project cost being listed at $1.29 million. The street, along with others in the subdivision, will be turned over to the city once accepted and a one-year warranty period passes.
Also on Thursday, the council will consider a resolution to authorize accepting a grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) to participate in the Local Parks Grant Program, related to Phase I of the Brenham Family Park. The total available funds for the first phase of the project come out to $1.76 million, including $750,000 through the grant program and $1.01 million allocated through sales tax revenue by way of the Brenham Community Development Corporation (BCDC).
Once the city signs the grant with TPWD, it will work with Quiddity Engineering to finalize the design and bid the project out this spring. The TPWD contract states that the project must be completed by May 2027, but the grant recipient may extend projects up to two additional years.
Councilmembers will also vote on an order to call a general election to be held on May 3rd for the Ward 1, Ward 3, At-Large Position 5 and At-Large Position 6 council seats. They will then look to order a special election, also on May 3rd, for 11 proposed amendments to the city’s charter.
In other business, the council will:
- Act on a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application through the Community Development Partnership Program offered by the Lower Colorado River Authority for the purchase of six thermal imaging cameras for the Brenham Fire Department.
- Consider a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to the Office of the Governor State Homeland Security Program to purchase three 5-gas monitors with three-year maintenance service contracts for the Brenham Fire Department.
- Hold executive session to consult with the city attorney regarding the Brenham Municipal Airport, its operations and services; meet with the city attorney about a settlement demand received by the City of Brenham; and deliberate on legal matters and the possible acquisition of real property in relation to the TxDOT Highway 290/Highway 36 interchange project. No action is scheduled to be taken.
The council will meet Thursday at 1 p.m. at Brenham City Hall.
