Our next race is Brenham School Board – Position 5, sought by Shawn Koonce and David Jantzi.  The seat is currently held by Tommie Sullivan, who opted not to run for another term.

Shawn Koonce is the executive director for the Boys and Girls Club of Washington County, with prior training as a pastor and involvement with churches and nonprofits around the world.

Koonce says his experience aligns with helping youth achieve their best future, and he wants to give every child a chance at a strong education, whatever that may look like for that individual student.  He says serving as a trustee means knowing when to use common sense or think outside of the box, setting aside any personal or political motivations, and acting as a unifier.

David Jantzi works as an office administrator for the local and area locations of Brazos Valley Allergy & Asthma Clinics.  His career has also included time as a teacher, coach and campus technology coordinator.

Jantzi says his philosophy is “see a need, meet a need”, and he wishes to extend that to Brenham ISD.  Some ways he seeks to do so is by maintaining consistency with curriculum to improve test scores, ensuring classrooms are conducive for learning through fair discipline and by rewarding and motivating teachers, and improving communication to build strong partnerships with families.

Each candidate was asked questions about their priorities for Brenham ISD, the main responsibilities of a trustee, and ideas on how to improve services provided by the school district.
