BRENHAM SPRING GAME SHOWCASES PROMISING RETURNING CLASS AND NEWCOMERS
The Brenham Cubs had their 2025 Spring Game on Friday May 16 and many were in attendance to get their first look at the 2025 Brenham Cubs Varsity Football Team.
When speaking to Head Coach Danny Youngs, he spoke about these young men with pride and excitement for what this year has in store. Brenham is returning 17 starters and coach Youngs described that as one of the team’s biggest advantages not only in games but in preparation as well with an already established chemistry. With leaders on both sides of the ball in MLB Caleb Espinoza and OG Andre Mojica along with other returning starters, Coach Youngs expects diligent and intense preparation.
As is with any spring game, there were also some new faces that made the most of their opportunity and incoming Sophomores CB Rylan Lewis and WR Markell Lewis were 2 players that were highlighted as pleasant surprises who stood out on Friday as part of an underclassmen group that is adapting well to their new positions on Varsity.
When looking at the offense, incoming Junior RB Tre Taylor was described as a promising contributor on the offense that the team expects to pair well with returning starter JaKoby Dixon. With an extremely talented backfield, Coach Youngs spoke about the importance of the passing game to keep the offense balanced and defenses honest. With multiple players at WR returning to the team to fight for the top spots, returning Seniors Chris Guidry and Cartelle Brown are amongst the starters returning to this offense that will be looking to create chemistry with the starting QB and contribute in the passing game along with the rest of the skill positions.
While returning Senior Xyran Upshaw received all the snaps at QB for the spring game, Coach Youngs mentioned that he still expects an intense competition for the starting QB role when Junior Hudson Hartstack returns from a rolled ankle this summer. Coach intends to keep the competition lively across the team with only a handful of starter positions locked in.
On the defensive side of the ball, it was made clear that one of those starting positions set in stone is that of MLB Caleb Espinoza as one of the leaders and most talented athletes on this team. With incoming Junior WLB Brooks Roznovsky being described as a standout performer in the spring game, expect for him to compete for playing time in a strong linebacker corps that also includes incoming sophomore J’Rius Booker, Junior Colton Nichelson and Seniors Kristian Prosper and Brennan Crawford. The trenches on both sides of the ball were also mentioned as a highlight of the day by Coach Youngs.
With an emphasis on preparation, Coach Youngs and his staff left the young men with a message to keep in mind as they leave for break before returning in the summer. He reminds them to stay prepared, embrace the “grind” and to make sure they come in to work hard and improve every day in order to stay ahead of the opposition in what is a very competitive district and region.
As for the Brenham Cub supporters, Week 1 will be against Huntsville in Cub Stadium. It will be a green out game, so wear your best and most green attire to support the Cubs against the Hornets in what will be an intense environment as the Hornets attempt to avenge their loss to the Cubs last year, when they went to Huntsville and defeated them.
