CITY DECIDES TO HAUL WASTE TO ALTAIR FACILITY BEGINNING THIS FALL
The Brenham City Council has approved an Altair landfill to send the city’s waste to beginning in November.
The Council today (Thursday) approved hauling the trash to a facility operated by Clean Harbors Environmental Services.
The city had been sending its trash to a landfill in Austin, but that facility will permanently close in November.
City Public Works Director Dane Rau told the council that his staff had looked at a site in Carlos, co-owned by the cities of Bryan and College Station. But that facility charges $26.69 per ton—compared to the Altair site which will charge $16.86 per ton.
Rau says the money saved in fees will more than offset the 10 miles further distance the trucks will have to travel.
Rau says the total expenditures for the year will be about $350,000, which would be a reduction in the current annual cost of $365,000 annually.
Also at today’s (Thursday) meeting, the council re-elected council member Gloria Nix the Mayor Pro Tem.
The council also formally repealed a tax phase-in agreement with Valmont Coatings. The agreement reached in March, was for a proposed galvanizing plant. Valmont has since decided not to locate that plant in Brenham.
