BURTON CITY COUNCIL TO VOTE ON TAX RATE, ILA WITH WASHINGTON CO. FOR SUBDIVISION ORDINANCE

The Burton City Council will potentially adopt a new property tax rate when it meets on Tuesday.

Councilmembers will hold a public hearing before taking a vote on setting the tax rate at $0.4200 per $100 valuation, which is over 8 cents more than the existing tax rate of $0.3363.

Making up the proposed rate is $0.09 allocated for maintenance and operations (M&O), above the current M&O rate of $0.43823, and $0.3300 for interest and sinking (I&S), more than the current I&S rate of $0.292477.

The calculated no-new-revenue rate is $0.3260, while the voter approval rate is $0.4740.

Also on Tuesday, the council will take up an interlocal agreement with Washington County regarding the city’s new subdivision ordinance for plat review, civil inspections and technical review.  While discussing the subdivision ordinance prior to adoption last month, the council expressed openness to working with the county for a short-term interlocal agreement to enforce the ordinance.

Other items will include a review of preliminary CCTV inspection findings for the wastewater line serving Burton ISD, including discussion of observed conditions and providing possible direction to city staff.  There will also be possible action to approve a draft legal agreement between the city and Burton ISD regarding connecting the fire suppression line to the city’s water system and establishing related stipulations and requirements.

In other business, the council will:

  • Consider engaging a third-party contractor for the clean-up and maintenance of overgrown, neglected and dilapidated properties within the city.
  • Vote on approving a records management policy, designating the city secretary as the city’s records management officer and authorizing the city secretary to complete and sign all necessary documentation for the Texas State Library and Archives Commission.
  • Take action regarding adopting Texas State Library and Archives Commission retention schedules for the city’s records management policy.

The council will meet Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Burton City Hall.
