NEW BURTON ISD GYM CLOSE TO COMPLETION

During a bond construction update at Wednesday’s Burton School Board meeting, Weaver and Jacobs Constructors Project Manager Ryan Malinovsky said the graphics in the gym are nearing completion, and a finishing coat on the floor was installed that day. He expects crews will begin working Tuesday on the trim where the floor meets the wall, and as long as the floor cures properly, the gym area should be completed by the end of next week.
Also making progress toward completion is the administrative area, including the receptionist space, conference room and offices. Malinovsky said a few “punchlist” items with flooring and paint still need to be taken care of, but he stated, “For the most part, we’re there.” He provided a target date of September 21st for when those spaces can start to be occupied, though he noted that the school district is still working with the City of Burton on fire suppression items.
Additionally, Malinovsky said workers have begun erecting steel in the new junior high area and anticipate to wrap that up in October, possibly early in the month. Fencing going in around the stadium is being completed, and work is continuing on stairs and ramps between the ag building and the new gym.
In action items on Wednesday, the board granted the superintendent the authority to issue a request for qualifications for construction management services in relation to long-term safety upgrades and maintenance improvements at the baseball and softball fields. Superintendent Vikki Curry said the board will consider moving forward when it meets next month.
Trustees also:
- Certified compliance with laws under Texas Education Code as enacted by Senate Bill 12 from the 89th Legislative Session. The laws pertain to parental rights in education, student clubs at public schools, and certain requirements and prohibitions regarding instruction, diversity, equity, and inclusion duties and social transitioning.
- Approved the school lunch charge plan.
