Crews working at the Washington County Courthouse recently made a potentially historic discovery.
In a post to social media, the county shared photos of a large box that was uncovered while the county’s contractor continued progress on the exterior courthouse restoration project.
County Judge John Durrenberger said during Tuesday’s State of the Community Luncheon that the box was hidden behind one of the stones on the courthouse, and that the county believes it may be a time capsule.

The courthouse was originally built in 1939, though it is not currently known if the box has been there since that time.
Durrenberger said the county is working on plans to hold a community opening for the possible time capsule and will share more information soon.
As for the exterior restoration project, Durrenberger said the goal is to have the renovations done by the end of the year.
