BRENHAM CITY COUNCIL AUTHORIZES FACILITY MASTER PLANNING STUDY

Members of the City of Brenham Parks Department join
the city council after its proclamation on Thursday,
recognizing October 21 as Unplug Texas Day. The day
encourages residents to get out to visit local parks,
engage in screen-free play, and enjoy recreational
activities.

The Brenham City Council unanimously agreed today (Thursday) to engage a firm to perform a facilities master plan.

The professional services agreement with GLS will evaluate 13 of the city’s facilities.  Director of Engineering Services Richard O’Malley said the data-driven study will look at how those facilities are currently used, whether they are being utilized to their full potential, and if they need upgrades.

City of Brenham Engineering Services Director Richard
O'Malley discusses a professional services agreement
proposal with GLS while visiting with city
councilmembers on Thursday.

The focus of the study will be on the departments for water/sewer construction, gas, public utilities administration, streets, central warehouse, electric, and maintenance.  It will also examine other departments that have seen growth or have aging buildings, such as the first fire station, the parks shop, city hall, the animal shelter, and the police department.

The cost for the agreement with GLS is for $50,000.  O’Malley said the study should take about eight weeks to complete, and the council will receive any recommendations that come about from the results.

Also at Thursday’s meeting, the council:

  • Approved an agreement with Brazos Paving Inc. to perform overlay work on Stone Street, between South Market and South Day Street, for $81,627.
  • Approved a five-year agreement with Perry Weather, Inc. to upgrade the lightning detection systems for city parks.  The total cost for the agreement comes out to $100,065.  The project will include added units at the Blue Bell Aquatic Center and the new Brenham Family Park, plus the systems at Hohlt, Henderson, Fireman’s, Linda Anderson and Jackson Street Parks.
  • Approved an agreement addendum with M2L Associates Inc. for additional services related to the design, bidding and oversight of the Brenham Family Park.  The addendum is for the kayak/fishing pier and the covered pavilion next to the playscape and restrooms.  The additional services are valued at $24,000 for the pavilion and $33,000 for the fishing pier; all costs are paid for with donations.
