CUB FOOTBALL DEFEAT BELTON 35-7 TO CLINCH DISTRICT TITLE
The Brenham Cub Football Team continued their winning ways on Friday night with a 35-7 victory over the Belton Tigers to claim the District 8-5A Division II Championship.
Brenham also finished the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record for the first time since 2011.
C.J. Glover had another big offensive night carrying the ball 30 times for 212 yards and four touchdowns. For Glover, it was his fourth straight 200+ yard rushing game since taking over the starting runningback job after Jakoby Dixon suffered a season ending knee injury. He's now at 1,226 rushing yards for the season, and 20 touchdowns.
Roland Branch and Nate Rau connected on four passes for 94 yards and a touchdown as well. Rau is at 685 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.
It was also a strong Cub defensive effort as they held the Tigers to 154 yards of total offense. This was the first time all season that Belton has been held to less than 300 yards in a game. They had been averaging 421 yards per game.
It all started for the Cubs in the first quarter after Tre'lyn Kelly made his seventh interception of the season. Glover scored his first touchdown of the night on a 2-yard run. The extra point was blocked, but Brenham still took a 6-0 with 4:19 left.
Kelly's seven interceptions are the most since Desmond Lockett during the 2013 season.
Glover scored again before the end of the first quarter on an 18-yard touchdown run at the 1:14 mark. Rau added the two-point conversion to increase the Cub lead to 14-0.
The defenses got stingy in the second quarter as neither team was able to find the end zone.
Brenham's next touchdown came in the third quarter as Glover scored on a 36-yard touchdown run, and Bleu Cienega added the extra point to increase the Cub advantage to 21-0 with 7:40 left in the quarter.
Branch would later find Rau on a 21-yard touchdown pass. Cienega added another PAT, and Brenham went up 28-0 with 3:29 to go in the third quarter.
The Cubs added one final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 47-yard touchdown run by Glover with 11:38 to go in the game. Cienega kicked the extra point to make it a 35-0 lead.
Belton did get one touchdown in the fourth quarter on a pass from Will Shepard to Gavin Ross to cut the score to 35-7, but by then the game was decided.

After the game, Brenham High School Principal Michael Watts presented Head Coach Danny Youngs with the District Championship Trophy.
By clinching the District Title, Brenham gets to play their Bi-District game at home. They will be facing the #4 team from District 7-5A Division II, Arlington Seguin.
They will play Friday at 7pm at Cub Stadium. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm on KWHI 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
