BRENHAM ISD TO DISCUSS BRENHAM ISD GOAL NUMBER FOUR
Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson has met with all three elementary schools this week to discuss the proposed plan to meet Brenham ISD District Goal No. 4.
The Brenham ISD Strategic Plan was developed last fall by the BISD Strategic Planning Committee. The committee, comprised of BISD staff members and administrators, community members, parents and a Brenham High School student, developed the following district goals:
1. BISD will provide a coordinated curriculum that is implemented through effective instructional practices.
2. BISD will develop responsible, respectful, and collaborative citizens.
3. BISD will provide a safe and secure environment at all BISD facilities.
4. BISD will balance the demographics on all elementary campuses.
5. BISD will attract and retain quality staff.
The Brenham ISD Board of Trustees and Dr. Jackson are working together on a plan to meet strategic goal No. 4 to support the success of all children in the Brenham ISD community.
The district will use a computerized selection process, based on logic set forth by the district.
This plan will only impact students new to the district and students entering prekindergarten and kindergarten in the 2016-2017 school year. Currently enrolled students will not be impacted by this plan.

If you walk down the hallways at the elementary schools in Brenham ISD, you will see learning happening. If you peek in the rooms, you will see books being read, teachers working with small groups, kids working in centers and a generally positive, pleasant learning environment. I know because I walk those halls often, not only as a staff member, but also as a parent. Brenham ISD has dedicated staff and really good kids – across the board! All 3 elementary schools are staffed by EXCELLENT teachers, led by STRONG administrators, and attended by GREAT students. While we cannot necessarily get every parent to engage outside the classroom, we CAN do our best as educators and community members to give EVERY child the best shot at success inside the classroom. Teachers are positive role models for BISD students every day. Having positive peer role models in the classroom is also crucial and can promote respectful and supportive relationships and build positive peer-to-peer interactions. As a mom, I would be proud if my child was a positive peer role model for a less fortunate classmate. Isn’t that what community and education is all about?! I support the plan to balance the demographics in Brenham ISD 100% because I know it’s what’s best for kids. ALL KIDS. My kids, your kids, their kids, his kids … ALL KIDS! I hope we can put adult problems aside and keep our eyes and hearts on what matters most. Kids.
If all professionals on both campuses are equal, then switch them out to the other campus. That will satisfy those concerns of better staffing at the “preferred campus”. It will take five years to see the student clicks diversified, then issue solved. If the superintendent lasts that long.
It is typical of Brenham people to want to stay in their clicks and put their kids in the same click. My wife is a teacher at Alton so I know first hand what is going on. If you want to control which school your kid goes to get in private school.
I totally agree with Dr.Jackson on this plan. All four of my children attended Alton. Teachers and staff are awesome!! The number one problem with parents know days is that they are scared to be “PARENTS” they want to be friends. Some parents want teachers to do everything. Behavior and respect has gone down the drain because of parenting skills. How are the teachers suppose to do their job, when we have not done ours? Thank you, Dr. Jackson for stepping up and doing someone else’s job.
What I want to know is Why is this one campus so far behind? Is it the teachers? Perhaps, the administrators? Or is it the students? Lack or parental help for the students? Maybe all of these? I agree, something needs to be done but trying to diversify the schools to bring up the ratings is not going to help. It will be more detrimental to the students who can excel and will be put in classes with those that can not. I can remember when I was growing up, we were put in our classes by our academic achievements. We were all on the same level and moved along at the same pace. Now my children are put into classrooms where some of the students are reading 4 to 5 grade levels behind my child and can’t add 2 plus 2, just so the classes will be diversified. Is this fair? I don’t think so, but what can be done? We have several that suffer because of a few.
I agree with Senior that mandatory parenting classes for disruptive classroom behavior by their children should be implemented. Start making parents responsible for the actions of their kids! And Parents-quit blaming everyone and everything but your child!!
Well logic would be geography as it should have been for the last 50 decades. So I would think that the private school sector will see a boost in enrollment. But for those that do not have the resources, it can be a positive experience for all if school district staff is up to the challenges. And this will require administrators to fully support the teachers. An investment of cameras in every classroom would be helpful. Continual class disruption and negative behavior should not be tolerated. This will also require cooperation and participation from parents. If students have issues due to lack of proper parenting, then mandatory classes for parents to enhance skills should be provided by district. The classroom issues that are so prevalent over the last five decades did not happen overnight and will not be resolved quickly. Patience and hard work will be required of all.
Wake up parents! Do you want your child assigned to a campus that is in turmoil? The majority of you will have NO choice in where your child attends ( I say majority because there will always be those who get “SPECIAL” treatment) If the little computer program says your child will attend the campus that is in academic turmoil, then that is where they will go. If you don’t know which campus that is, then I suggest you wake up and start asking questions! There are many parents contemplating making the move from a private school to BISD next year. I implore you to think long and hard about what is the best environment for your child. The spiritual, ACADEMIC and social foundation they receive at such a young age is the base for the rest of their lives. Please educate yourselves on what is happening.
It is very interesting that parents and members of the community who have no time on any campus, nor time in any classroom can provide sound judgement regarding a very sound program. BISD, with the help of parents, community members and staff have created a non-threatening, less disruptive solution to a major issue in our District. Every elementary campus is staffed with highly qualified, excellent educators and support staff. The issues on any elementary campus are not teacher based, but parent based. Hopefully the parents who wait until the last minute or even after the school year begins to put their Pre-K students into school will decide it’s important to take care of getting their children into school at the regular preregistration time. The Pre-K students, new Kindergarten students and all other new 1st through 4th grade students coming into our schools next year will be provided excellent educational opportunities on every campus. The Pre-K parents wanting to preregistration their children will know in advance as to when the registration date is. They will have to provide honest qualifying financial information that includes all of the adults living in their household (including step parents, boyfriends, girlfriends, grandparents, and any other adults living in the household). Families already established on a campus will be kept together. There won’t be an opportunity to request a campus or teacher because there won’t be a need for that because every campus will provide excellent educational opportunities. Our community should be grateful BISD is not going to uproot many of the students to meet a zoning requirement. The computer based selection process is fair and should not cause the uproar that zoning would have created, especially if parents and community members understand that change is good and this change will be the best thing for BISD’s families and our community.
“The district will use a computerized selection process, based on logic set forth by the district.”
I wish they would provide more information regarding the logic that will be used in the selection process…
