BLINN WOMEN’S HOOPS SEND EIGHT TO FOUR-YEAR SCHOOLS

Players heading to seven universities in six states

The Blinn College women’s basketball team is sending eight players from its 2014-15 team to play at four-year universities.

The Buccaneers are sending players to seven universities in six states, including two players who will stay in Texas.

Blinn posted its fourth consecutive 20-win season, finishing the season 20-11 with a 13-7 record in the Region XIV Conference.

Shakera Barnes (Snook) signed with St. Edward’s University and Katelynn Johnson (Baton Rouge, La.) signed with University of the Incarnate Word. Barnes averaged 7.3 points a game and led the Buccaneers in minutes played. Johnson was a sharpshooter for Blinn, leading the team in 3-pointers with 85 while averaging 13.6 points per game.

Alexus Freeman (Navasota) and Brianna Luton (Houston) are heading to Alcorn State University in Mississippi. Freeman averaged 11.3 points a game and averaged 36.4 percent behind the 3-point line. Luton was routinely matched up against the opposing team’s best offensive weapon and averaged 5.8 points per game.

Moe Bedford (Houston) signed with Henderson State University in Arkansas after she averaged 5.4 points a game last season. Chant Lewis (Winnfield, La.), who averaged 9.7 points per game, signed with Grambling State University in Louisiana.

Micarah Malone (Spring) signed with Cumberland University in Tennessee as she averaged three points per game. Finally, Nancy Warioba (Kisumu, Kenya) signed with University of South Florida as she averaged a double-double with 10.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game and was named the Don Wilhelm Award winner as the most valuable player for the team.
