BRENHAM FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO CHEMICAL SPILL FRIDAY

The Brenham Fire Department was called out to a chemical spill early Friday afternoon.  A 55 gallon drum of acid had ruptured on a delivery truck at the Blue Bell Aquatic Center on Tom Green Street in Brenham.  The acid spilled out of the truck and onto the concrete driveway facing Blue Bell Road.  Swimmers and personnel from the Aquatic Center were evacuated from inside the building and the outdoor pool area.  The Fire Department’s Hazmat trailer was called for and firemen donned full hazmat suits as they covered the spill with neutralizer and emptied the remaining acid into another container.  Two employees from the chemical delivery company assisted in the cleanup.  The Brenham Fire Department was on the scene for about 2 hours.

  1. I am very proud of the men and women of the Brenham Fire Deaprtment. Today’s hazardous material incident could not have really gone much better. The reality hazardous material incidents are by far the most arduous and time consuming to mitigate. There are many moving pieces and add 100 plus degree temperatures and simple tasks are even harder to accomplish safely. Our members and staff did an excellent job today in getting this incident stabilized and mitigated to prevent any additional loss of product into the air or ditch. Most importantly that mission was accomplished with any injuries, exposures and heat related complications.

I want to also give a special shout out to the EMS Crew from Washington County EMS and Police Officers of the Brenham Police Deaprtment. The EMS crew and supervisor assisted us by evaluating our personnel and checking their vital signs that were required to be encapsulated in their protective gear during the operation. It is such a blessing to have such a fine and dedicate group of medical professionals stand along side us during our incidents to make sure we are safe or need immediate medical attention. Thank you.

Thanks to the Brenham Police Officers on-scene that handled traffic and people control which allowed us to focus on the incident at hands. I know handling traffic doesn’t sound very exciting I would however, challenge anyone to stand out in the blazing sun with all that gear on to make sure our scene and personnel are safe. Thank you
