BUCS’ WIN STREAK ENDS AT 16

LAREDO, Texas – Hitting errors cost the top-ranked Blinn College volleyball team a 17th consecutive victory here Saturday.

After winning the first two sets over the Laredo Lady Palominos, errors began to plague the Buccaneers as Laredo rallied to win, 16-26, 28-29, 25-23, 25-14, 15-11.

“We just had way too many errors,” coach Erin Mellinger said. “We went from five in the first set to 10 in the fifth.”

Blinn had an 11-8 lead in the fifth set when Laredo rallied for seven points to take the match. The Bucs (23-2, 7-1) tried to feed middle blocker Bruna Evangelista, who had 24 kills and a .457 hitting percentage, but the Lady Palominos front line stepped up its game to shut down the sophomore from Brazil.

“Laredo built some confidence in the third and fourth set and we weren’t able to pull it out,” Mellinger said.

The loss is the Bucs’ first since Aug. 31 when they lost in five sets to Panola.

“We’ve had a target on our backs for more than a month now, and each match we know we’re going to get everybody’s best performance and we have to play our best,” Mellinger said. “Today we didn’t.”

Blinn returns home Monday at 6 p.m. against Navarro in the Blinn P.E. Building.
